In 1990, a new chapter began for the Botschaft der Republik Namibia in Berlin. This wasn’t just about a building. It was about forging a connection between Namibia and Germany. The Botschaft der Republik Namibia stands as a symbol of this relationship. It is located on Reichsstraße 17 in the elegant Westend district. Let’s explore the journey of this embassy. It reflects the evolving ties between these two nations.

The Botschaft der Republik Namibia’s story intertwined with Germany’s own history. After Namibia gained independence in 1990, diplomatic ties with Germany were quickly established. The embassy first opened in Bonn, Germany’s then capital. It was situated on Mainzer Straße 47. Following the German reunification and the government’s move to Berlin, the Botschaft der Republik Namibia also relocated. Its first Berlin home was on Wichmannstraße 6 in the Tiergarten district. Then in 2008, it found its current prestigious location on Reichsstraße 17.

The building itself has a captivating tale to tell. It’s known as the Goldstein Villa. This beautiful structure was built in 1923. It served as a residence for the Jewish textile manufacturer Eugen Goldstein. Designed by architect Curt Leschnitzer, the villa embodies a neoclassical style. It features a grand entrance with an impressive staircase. During the Nazi era, the villa was seized from Goldstein. It then became the headquarters for the Deutsche Eisenhandels-AG. Later, it even served as the home of the Hertha BSC sports club until 1998. Finally, in 2007, Namibia acquired the villa. After renovations, it became the Botschaft der Republik Namibia in 2008.

Inside the Botschaft der Republik Namibia, several departments work to maintain and strengthen diplomatic relations. These include the Ambassador’s office, a political and press office, a defense section, and departments dedicated to economics, trade, culture, visas, consular services, and social matters. The current ambassador, Martin Andjaba, assumed his post in February 2021. He carries the responsibility of representing Namibia’s interests in Germany, the Holy See, Poland, and Turkey.

The Botschaft der Republik Namibia in Berlin isn’t just a place of diplomacy. It is a living testament to Namibia’s journey as a nation. It also represents its enduring connection with Germany. The next time you pass by Reichsstraße 17, take a moment to appreciate the history and significance of this remarkable building. It stands as a symbol of international cooperation and cultural exchange. It also embodies the story of a villa transformed into an embassy.
