Established in 1696, the Universität der Künste Berlin stands as a testament to artistic pursuit. It has evolved from the Kurfürstliche Academie der Mahler-, Bildhauer- und Architectur-Kunst. This institution, now known as the Berlin University of the Arts or UdK, is the second largest art school in Europe. The Universität der Künste is one of only three universities in Germany that combines art and music faculties.
The Universität der Künste Berlin isn’t confined to a single campus. It occupies around 15 locations, primarily in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. The main building resides on Hardenbergstraße, near the Zoologischer Garten station. Other locations include the former Joachimsthalsches Gymnasium and a building on Einsteinufer that once housed the State School of Optics and Photo Technology. The Volkswagen University Library is nestled on Fasanenstraße. The university also extends its presence to Grunewaldstraße, Grainauer Straße, Karlsruher Straße, Lietzenburger Straße, Mierendorffstraße, Straße des 17. Juni, and the Uferstudios in Gesundbrunnen.
The university offers a wide range of over 70 courses. The UdK Berlin offers Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees. It also maintains traditional programs in the fine arts. Doctoral and post-doctoral qualifications are also available. The Universität der Künste Berlin also recognizes the Konzertexamen and Meisterschüler as equivalent to a doctorate. Most programs begin with a two-semester foundation course. This provides a base for specialized study.
The Universität der Künste Berlin has four colleges: Fine Arts, Design, Music, and Performing Arts. It boasts roughly 3,500 students. The UdK also co-manages the Jazz-Institut Berlin with the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music. It shares the Hochschulübergreifende Zentrum Tanz with the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts. The UdK Rundgang, an annual art fair open to the public, showcases emerging talent. It is a highlight of Berlin’s art scene.
