Rocks And Roots Park wasn’t always a park. Imagine this space before 2009. It was likely just another overlooked city lot. Landscape architect Nancy Owens saw something different. She envisioned a place where nature and community could meet. Owens found inspiration in Central Park’s schist outcroppings. She noticed how parkgoers interacted with the rocks and wanted to recreate that connection.
The defining feature of Rocks And Roots Park is its natural rock outcropping. Many might have seen it as an obstacle but Owens transformed it into the park’s centerpiece.
Owens did more than just highlight the existing rock. She incorporated the site’s history into her design. Old bricks from former buildings were reused. She researched the bricks and found they came from brickworks up the Hudson River Valley.
