The 9th and 10th centuries were marked by fragmentation and power struggles among various counts.
Intriguingly Hainaut was a frontier territory for centuries bordering the Kingdom of France. It formed part of Lotharingia the middle kingdom sandwiched between the powerful East and West Frankish realms. Despite its inclusion in the Holy Roman Empire it remained culturally and linguistically French. The counts of Hainaut were often entangled in the complex politics of their larger neighbours sometimes even ruling other counties such as Flanders and Holland through personal unions.
