Gazing upon this serene structure, can you sense the echoes of centuries past? This, my friends, is the Παρεκκλήσι Ταξιαρχών, a Byzantine gem nestled near Kalyvia Thorikou. The church stands as a testament to enduring faith, its story woven into the very fabric of Attica’s history. Let us journey back to the 5th and 6th centuries, a time when a grand three-aisled basilica graced this very spot. Sadly, raids and plunderings forced its abandonment, leaving only ruins in their wake. But from these remnants, hope blossomed. During the Byzantine period, a smaller church arose, clinging to the heart of the original basilica’s central aisle. This became the catholicon of the Taxiarches monastery. This very Παρεκκλήσι Ταξιαρχών provided solace and shelter to a notable visitor. In 1810, the English poet and philhellene, Lord Byron, sought refuge within the monastery walls during his travels to Sounion. The church, as we see it today, retains its aisle-less basilica form, crowned with a wooden roof. Around its walls, the ghostly outlines of the two older churches whisper their stories to those who listen closely. The Byzantine-era built screen stands as a sentinel, guarding the secrets of the past. Incorporated Early Christian sculptures add layers of historical intrigue. A twin shrine, consisting of two monolithic columns with elaborate capitals, graces the space before the screen. Throughout its existence, the Παρεκκλήσι Ταξιαρχών has been adorned with vibrant wall paintings. Remarkably, in some areas, three distinct layers of these paintings have miraculously survived. The most recent layer, still visible today, dates to the 18th century. It boasts impressive full-bodied figures and scenes, including the Annunciation and the poignant Man of Sorrows. A striking representation of Archangel Michael, standing tall next to the screen, commands attention. These artistic treasures are attributed to disciples of Georgios Markos, a renowned religious painter of the 18th century. He left his artistic mark on numerous churches in Attica’s Mesogeia region. Beyond the Παρεκκλήσι Ταξιαρχών, other buildings dot the precinct. These structures served as the cells of the older church, echoing with the memories of those who resided there. The church comes alive once a year, on November 8th. On this special day, the tradition of “korbani” is revived, offering food to the faithful, a custom observed in various parts of Attica. As we conclude our visit to the Παρεκκλήσι Ταξιαρχών, let its story of resilience and rebirth linger in your thoughts.
