Imagine slaves banding together to serve God. That’s the origin story of a church. This is the story of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church.
Mount Pisgah Baptist Church has a rich history. Its story involves persistence and a mission. The mission was to make disciples. They wanted to evangelize the world. They aimed to represent Christ.
There are conflicting views about the church’s true beginnings. However it is believed that the congregation started in 1853 or 1854. Even as slaves they united to worship. Originally the church was named Sunnyside Baptist Church. Reverend Jacob Govan became pastor around 1865. He served until 1877. In 1870 Sunnyside Baptist changed its name. It became Mount Pisgah Baptist Church.
Tragedy struck in 1902. A fire destroyed the original structure. But the congregation was resilient. They rebuilt the church in 1903. A black builder named A. W. Thorne constructed the new building. The new Mount Pisgah was larger. It was more functional. Its design was architecturally significant. It showcased early twentieth-century Romanesque Revival style. The brick construction was noteworthy. It demonstrated dedication during a difficult time. Few African Americans had much money then.
The church features a pyramid with cross-gable design. Its fenestration detail is remarkable. Interior features add to its importance. Mount Pisgah stands as an example of early religious architecture. It is one of the oldest churches in Orangeburg and South Carolina. In 1985 it earned a place on the National Registry of Historic Places.
Mount Pisgah has had 13 ministers. Reverend Govan was the first. Then came Reverend J. Harvey. Following him was Reverend J. Williams. Reverend A. J. Stokes also served. Next was Reverend Samuel W. Flynn. Then came Reverend R. Rice and Reverend J. H. Posey. Reverend Charles D. Salley led the church. Reverend Nelson C. Nix followed. Reverend John D. Rhodes served as pastor. Reverend F.G.S. Everett also led. Reverend D. Edward Chaney preceded the current pastor. In 2011 Reverend Gregory A. Young became the 13th pastor.
Mount Pisgah offers modern and traditional services. Services are even held in Spanish. The church wants to help people find Jesus. They aim to transform people with Christ’s love. They encourage people to become devoted followers. This focus is clear in their worship and small groups. It defines how they love God and others. Mount Pisgah Baptist Church continues its mission today.
