What secrets does a traffic triangle hold? Right here at Libra Triangle, we uncover a story woven into the fabric of Elmhurst’s history. Libra Triangle, this small green space at the intersection of Broadway and Justice Avenue, isn’t just a place for a quick rest. It’s a testament to a time when Elmhurst was known as Newtown, a town with its center of government right on this very spot. Imagine, in 1803, Newtown Town Hall stood proudly here. It even housed a courthouse starting in 1849. Libra Triangle witnessed the transformation of Newtown into the Elmhurst we know today. The town hall served as a courthouse and police station until 1940. Then, the 110th Precinct moved to a new building. Finally, in 1966, the old town hall was demolished. Justice Avenue expanded, leaving behind this triangular space. Commissioner Henry J. Stern, with a nod to the location’s history and a playful pun on “Justice,” christened it Libra Triangle. So, as you stand here, remember that beneath the grass and pavement lies the heart of old Newtown, a reminder that even the smallest spaces can hold significant stories.
