Atop Schonberg’s western peak stands Burgruine Schneeburg. Its weathered stones whisper tales of centuries past. This magnificent ruin is more than just stones and mortar. It’s a living testament to Freiburg’s rich history. Burgruine Schneeburg was built by the Lords of Hornberg sometime before 1312. The name itself might hint at the powerful Schnewlin family. They were prominent in 14th century Freiburg. However records show the Hornbergs as owners.

In 1349 a significant event reshaped Schneeburg’s destiny. Werner von Hornberg transferred ownership to St Gallen Abbey. He received it back as a fief. In return he gained control of Ebringen. This transaction made Schneeburg the center of a small feudal estate. The castle’s strategic location offered sweeping views of the valley. It provided protection and control of the surrounding lands.

Intriguingly the castle wasn’t destroyed in a dramatic battle. Older texts incorrectly claimed it fell during the 1525 Peasants’ War. However there’s no evidence for this. Instead Schneeburg was abandoned sometime before 1500. The Falkensteins acquired land in Ebringen. They established their residence there. This marked the end of Schneeburg as a significant power center. The once imposing fortress slowly succumbed to the elements. It became the intriguing ruin we see today.

The surviving structures paint a picture of medieval life. The northern section is best preserved. It possibly housed the lord’s living quarters. A large courtyard once existed. Now there’s a stone enclosure. It likely served as a well or perhaps a fire pit. The southern section might have housed servants and the kitchen. New sandstone lintels were added in the 1900s. They matched fragments found in the old well shaft. Recent stabilization efforts ensured Schneeburg will continue to stand. The ruin remains a captivating site offering a glimpse into Freiburg’s vibrant past.

Today Burgruine Schneeburg is a popular hiking destination. Visitors can enjoy the breathtaking views and the quiet beauty of the ruins. They can imagine the lives of those who once called this place home. The castle’s story is one of power ambition and the relentless passage of time. It’s a story etched into the stones of Burgruine Schneeburg. A story you can experience firsthand.
