What secrets does a name hold? Kleinschirma, “Little Schirma,” whispers tales of a larger region, a hint of a forgotten whole. Here in Kleinschirma, nestled in the valley of the Schirmbach, a tributary of the Große Striegis, the landscape itself speaks of the past. Kleinschirma stretches out before us, a “Waldhufendorf,” a village carved from the forest. Imagine those early settlers, arriving around 1162, drawn by the promise of land and a new beginning. They cleared the dense woods, establishing their farms along the river, shaping the very layout we see today. The Schirmbach, flowing from the Hospitalwald, carved its path through the gneiss, creating the valley that cradled Kleinschirma. The village rests at the foot of the Erzgebirge, the Ore Mountains, a region once shrouded in dense, unexplored forest. This “Miriquidi,” or dark forest, began to yield to settlers in the 12th century, as people from Franken, Swabia, and Thuringia migrated here. Kleinschirma’s story intertwines with the powerful monastery of Altzella. The lands of the Striegis and the Schirmbach valley belonged to the monastery until the Reformation, a testament to the monastery’s influence in shaping this region. The name “Kleinschirma” itself evolved over time. First mentioned in 1227 as “Schirmana minori,” then “parva Schyrma” and “cleynen Schirma,” it finally became “Kleinschirma” in 1590. The name reflects a larger “Schirma” area, a detail hinting at a more complex history waiting to be uncovered. This village, spanning 500 hectares, has seen its share of history. In 1529, Peter Alnpeck was granted the Kleinschirma estate. Later, in 1555, Elector Moritz gifted Kleinschirma to his chancellor, Ulrich von Mordeisen. Imagine the bustling activity in Kleinschirma during the Napoleonic Wars. Records from 1832, discovered in the church tower, reveal that the 338 residents had to provide lodging for 21,515 soldiers and 12,165 horses between 1806 and 1816. That’s an incredible burden for such a small community. Kleinschirma continued to grow, from 253 inhabitants in 1834 to 514 in 1890. The arrival of the Dresden–Werdau railway line in 1869 brought new connections and opportunities. The 20th century brought changes, including the loss of Kleinschirma’s independence in 1994 when it became part of Oberschöna. Yet, the village persists, a testament to the enduring spirit of those who settled here centuries ago, their lives woven into the fabric of Kleinschirma.
