What do ducks, sewage, and rare birds all have in common? They all have a fascinating history at Mitchell Lake. Right here in San Antonio, Mitchell Lake is a 600-acre body of water with a past as rich and diverse as the birdlife it now sustains. The Spanish were the first to recognize its value, using it as a watering hole for their cattle in the 18th century. They aptly named it “Lake of the Ducks” due to the abundance of waterfowl. By the late 19th century, the Mitchell family acquired the lake, using it primarily for hunting. In 1901, the city of San Antonio purchased Mitchell Lake, but not for its recreational or ecological value. It was transformed into a waste management site, forever changing the landscape and perception of the lake. For decades, Mitchell Lake served as a wastewater discharge area. However, by the 1970s, the ecological importance of the lake, especially as a haven for migratory birds, began to be recognized. Efforts to reclaim this once-abused habitat were put into motion. Sewage discharge was completely stopped in 1987. Under the stewardship of the San Antonio Water System and, later, the National Audubon Society, Mitchell Lake underwent a remarkable transformation. Mitchell Lake today is a testament to the power of conservation and community effort. It’s a shining example of how a site once associated with pollution could be reborn as a thriving ecological haven, attracting birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike.
