Two vows shaped the existence of this magnificent edifice. We are standing before the Église Sacré-Cœur in Lille. This church stands at the corner of Rue Nationale and Rue Solférino. It is in the Lille-Centre quarter. Its construction spanned the late 19th century. Inside, a collection of eleven stained-glass windows awaits. They have been classified as historical monuments since 1983.

The story begins with the Dames de l’association des Enfants de Marie du Sacré-Cœur. They were in the Chapelle des Dames du Sacré-Cœur. It was October 7 1870. They vowed to protect Lille from Prussian invasion. About ten years later, the parish church was open. Then a second vow arose from the ladies of the city. They wanted a chapel dedicated to the Sacré-Cœur. This became a space for reflection within the church.

Architect Jules Batigny erected the Église Sacré-Cœur. Construction occurred from 1875 to 1878. It then continued from 1895 to 1898. Absidial chapels were added in the second half of the 1880s. On June 20 1902, Monseigneur Étienne-Marie-Alphonse Sonnois consecrated Lille. He dedicated it to the Sacré-Cœur de Jésus. Lille was then part of the diocese of Cambrai. An important congress of the Guard of Honor of the Sacré-Cœur took place on June 12 1910. Monseigneur François-Marie-Joseph Delamaire presided over it.

The bell tower reached 75 meters. It was not completed until the mid-20th century. Architect Sarazin constructed it. It was made of reinforced concrete. The bell tower suffered damage from the elements. It underwent complete restoration from 2005 to 2008.

Église Sacré-Cœur stands as one of Lille’s grandest churches. It stretches 90 meters long. Its width is 24 meters. The height reaches 22 meters under the main vault. The church adopts a basilica plan. A small garden is accessible.

Inside the Église Sacré-Cœur, light filters through beautiful stained-glass windows. They depict the Immaculate Conception and scenes from the Bible. The windows tell biblical stories in vibrant colors. The chapel features a superb organ. The Église Sacré-Cœur and Église Saint-Michel form the Notre-Dame-de-Pentecôte parish.

Consider the master altar crafted from Carrara marble, bronze and semi-precious stones. Edouard Buisine, son of Charles Buisine-Rigot, sculpted it. Jules Batigny designed it. It appeared at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. Placide Poussielgue-Rusand created the large candelabras. They surround the master altar. The girandoles adorn the pillars.

Pierre Schyven of Brussels built the grand organ. Alphonse Mailly inaugurated it in 1883. Bevington & Sons created the English neo-Gothic choir organ. It dates to the late 19th century.

Take a moment to appreciate the blend of faith and art. The Église Sacré-Cœur embodies Lille’s history. It reflects its people’s devotion. It is open every day.
