White rocks. That’s what Pak Shek Kok means. Look around you. Can you see any evidence of those white rocks? The name itself hints at a history older than the gleaming skyscrapers of modern Shenzhen. Pak Shek Kok was once a different place entirely. Two creeks flowed here their waters meeting the sea. The land between them created a small convex area. This is the original Pak Shek Kok.

Imagine this. Long before reclamation projects transformed the landscape Pak Shek Kok was a tranquil estuary. Fishermen cast their nets. Small villages nestled beside the creeks. Life revolved around the rhythms of the tides. The “Kok” in Pak Shek Kok a Cantonese word meaning convex land on the shore accurately describes this location. The “Pak Shek” white rock probably referred to a local feature though precise documentation is lacking.

The Kowloon-Canton Railway Tolo Highway and even the Hong Kong Science Park now sit on land reclaimed from the sea. This dramatic transformation reshaped the area beyond recognition. The creeks are gone their mouths redirected to drainage systems. The original Pak Shek Kok now exists only in memory and old maps like the War Office map of 1924 which doesn’t even show the name. It’s a testament to how drastically human development can alter the natural world.

The area’s administrative status is also interesting. Pak Shek Kok and its surrounding villages are part of Tai Po District. However its proximity to Sha Tin District complicates matters. The reclamation divides the areas. Most of Hong Kong Science Park actually belongs to Sha Tin District. This is a detail many overlook. It’s a reminder that boundaries are fluid things changing with time and development.

The future of Pak Shek Kok is also in flux. In 2013 a government proposal surfaced. It called for residential development of Pak Shek Kok East. A new rail station Pak Shek Kok station is also proposed. These plans suggest a continued evolution for this area. Its history will forever be intertwined with the changes it continues to undergo. Pak Shek Kok from a quiet estuary to a modern hub. A journey from white rocks to gleaming glass and steel. What will the next chapter hold?
