Imagine this: a school bell echoes through the halls of Ziehenschule. It is a sound that has resonated here since 1913. This Frankfurt gymnasium is more than just a place of learning. It is a tapestry woven with threads of history, innovation, and community.

The Ziehenschule first opened its doors as the Eschersheimer Realschule. The school started with 26 boys and three teachers. They gathered in the Heddernheimer Volksschule because the school had no building. In 1926, it was renamed in honor of Julius Ziehen. He was a respected pedagogy professor from Frankfurt.

Did you know the Ziehenschule played a role in language education? Since 1974, the Ziehenschule has offered a bilingual program starting in the 7th grade. Students can study subjects in French. This is possible because French is taught as a first language in several classes from the 5th grade. This program allows students to obtain both the German Abitur and the French Baccalauréat. This opens doors to studying in France as a “French native”.

In 1982, the Ziehenschule pioneered a mentorship program. The school was the first gymnasium in Frankfurt to do so. Older students guide fifth-graders during their transition from primary school. These mentors help new students navigate the school buildings and resolve conflicts.

The Ziehenschule fosters a love for the arts. The school provides unique opportunities for students interested in theater. Besides the typical music courses, students can choose “Darstellendes Spiel” that is performing arts in grades 9 to 13. The English Drama Group has performed plays in English since 2003. They even participate in the Frankfurt School Theatre Days.

The school’s commitment to providing opportunities extends to supporting students facing financial hardship. The Verein der Freunde und Förderer assists students. The association ensures they can participate in class trips.

The Ziehenschule has seen its share of challenges. In March 2021, a break-in and arson incident occurred. This act of vandalism forced the temporary relocation of several classes. Yet, the Ziehenschule community showed resilience. Sanierungsarbeiten were completed within a year.

Despite being known for languages and music, Ziehenschule caters to science enthusiasts. The school offers a chemistry course at the University of Frankfurt. The course also provides astronomy and gardening clubs.

The Ziehenschule encourages competition and achievement. Students participate in contests. These include the Heureka competition and Olympiads in various fields.

In 1933, teachers were urged to connect with the Hitler Youth. By 1934, schools were directed to excuse students for leadership training courses. The German salute was required before and after each lesson.

As you stand here, consider the Ziehenschule. The Ziehenschule is a place where tradition meets innovation. It is a school where students can explore their passions and prepare for the future. The Ziehenschule is more than just a school. It is a community that shapes lives.
