Founded in 1924 the École Supérieure de Journalisme de Lille stands before you. A testament to Lille’s rich journalistic heritage it’s more than just a building. It’s a living chronicle.

This institution wasn’t always here. It began within the Catholic faculties. Doctor Paul Verschave a man nicknamed “the little father” despite not being a priest founded it. His vision was to train journalists for the Catholic press. A fascinating detail is that the school initially focused on spreading Catholic political propaganda. It later evolved to train journalists for the local press playing a vital role in regional information dissemination.

The ESJ Lille wasn’t always located in its current location. It initially resided at 67 Boulevard Vauban. In 1969 it received state recognition a pivotal moment in its history. Then in 1981 it moved to its present address 50 rue Gauthier-de-Châtillon. The building formerly housed the physics institute of Lille University. This building housed the IUT management institute in the 1970s.

Over the decades the ESJ Lille has adapted and grown. It expanded its offerings to include various specializations such as sports journalism and local press journalism. The school also established a branch in Montpellier and offers online courses. It has consistently ranked among the top journalism schools in France a reflection of its high-quality education and influential alumni.

The ESJ Lille has always been a beacon of journalistic excellence. It has produced numerous prominent journalists enriching the French and international media landscape. Its commitment to journalistic integrity and innovation is evident in its various initiatives and its active role in the evolution of journalism education.

Its history is interwoven with the history of Lille. Its presence on this street is a reminder of the city’s vibrant intellectual and journalistic life. It continues to train new generations of journalists. These journalists will contribute to the shaping of public opinion. They will inform and interpret the world. The ESJ Lille remains a significant part of Lille’s identity and legacy. It’s a place where stories are born and careers begin. A place where the future of journalism takes shape.
