Hidden amongst Berlin’s vibrant streets stands the Evangelische Verheissungskirchengemeinde a testament to resilience and adaptation. This unassuming church building in Friedrichshain holds a captivating history. Initially built in 1879 it served as a chapel for a new cemetery. Designed by Gustav Knoblauch and Eduard Wex its historicist architecture is a beautiful sight.

The Evangelische Verheissungskirchengemeinde wasn’t always a church. It began in 1949. Berlin’s large congregations were being divided into smaller ones. This new congregation arose from two vacant parishes in Friedrichshain. They lacked a church. A new community center wasn’t approved. Fortunately the damaged chapel was repaired. It became the Evangelische Verheissungskirchengemeinde’s worship space until 1996.

The congregation also used a hall on Frankfurter Allee. This hall served as a synagogue. It fell into disuse after 1933. Eventually the Berlin City Mission took over this space.

In 1997 dwindling numbers led to a merger. The Offenbarungskirche and Verheissungskirche congregations united. The Zwinglikirche joined later. This event shows the changing religious landscape of Berlin.

The Evangelische Verheissungskirchengemeinde’s building has seen many changes. Since 2007 it’s been used as a theater. Even into the 2010s occasional funeral services took place there. Now however funeral services happen in a new building on the cemetery grounds. The small church building is now primarily a rehearsal and performance space for the Meine Bühne children’s and youth theater.

Today the Evangelische Verheissungskirchengemeinde’s story reflects Berlin’s own history. It showcases adaptability and the enduring spirit of community. Its yellow-brick facade and distinctive baldachin over the entrance stand as a symbol of this enduring spirit. Take a moment to appreciate the beautiful architecture. Reflect on the rich history contained within these walls. The Evangelische Verheissungskirchengemeinde’s history reminds us of the ever-evolving nature of faith and community in a dynamic city.
