Didn’t you always want to know about sacred spaces? Let’s talk about Sharon Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit. It stands as a testament to faith. It also shows community spirit. But this Detroit church’s story actually began far away. It started with humble beginnings in 1876. A small log building housed faithful believers. This original building could only seat about fifty people on split-log benches. For six years, it went by another name. It was first known as Union Church. Baptists and Methodists shared it in the Bethany community.

In 1881, a change occurred. The Methodist group stopped holding services there. Rev. W. S. Fontaine was the Baptist pastor. He suggested a new name. The name Sharon was embraced.

Fast forward to 1938. Sharon Missionary Baptist Church had grown significantly. Its membership reached 227 people. The original building was too small. It could not adequately serve the growing congregation’s needs. So, under the leadership of Rev. J. C. Gillespie, a new building project began. A modern brick-veneer building was constructed. This new space featured a larger auditorium. It could seat approximately 400 people. There were also five Sunday school classrooms. The building included new amenities. These included pews, electric lights, and an updated heating system.

From its start, Sharon Missionary Baptist Church has held a clear vision. The goal was to honor the Lord. They also wanted to proclaim His word in the community. Despite changes in the world, this mission remains. It is a constant focus of the church. Sharon Missionary Baptist Church supports several organizations. These include the Southern Baptist Convention and the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. They also support the Dan Valley Baptist Association. They work to fulfill the Great Commission. The church seeks to spread the Word of God.
