“Is it true,” a young boy whispered, tugging at his father’s sleeve, “that the hammers here were once powered by the spirits of the mountain?” The father chuckled. “Not spirits, lad, but by the very heart of Freiberg itself – the water.” They stood before the Hammermühle, a relic of Freiberg’s industrial past. The Hammermühle, or Freibergsdorf Hammer Mill, as it’s formally known, isn’t just a building. It’s a time capsule. It whispers stories of a time when the clang of hammers and the rush of water filled the air, shaping not only metal but the very lives and livelihoods of Freiberg’s inhabitants. First mentioned in 1607, the Hammermühle has witnessed centuries of Freiberg’s history. It began its life shaping iron, producing everything from mining tools to agricultural implements. Imagine the rhythmic pounding of the hammers, shaping iron for the miners who toiled beneath the earth, and crafting tools that helped farmers cultivate the land above. This little mill served both the mountain and the valley. In 1903, St. John’s Hospital acquired the Hammermühle. Its focus shifted. For the next seventy years, copper became the primary metal worked within its walls. The Hammermühle became an integral part of the local economy, its output vital for the region. But time marches on. In 1974, the clang of the hammers fell silent. The era of industrial production at the Hammermühle came to an end. Yet, the story didn’t end there. Between 1979 and 1989, a dedicated group breathed new life into the old mill. The Hammermühle was carefully restored, its machinery brought back to working order. Today, the Hammermühle stands as a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship of those who came before. The massive water wheel, nearly four meters in diameter, is once again ready to turn. The oak driveshaft, a hefty 7 tonnes and 9.5 meters long, is poised to transfer the power of the water to the hammers. Three tilt hammers, weighing 100, 200, and 250 kilograms respectively, wait patiently for the next demonstration, ready to show visitors the power and precision of this historic technology. The Hammermühle is more than just a museum; it’s a living piece of history.
