Then in the 1960s something remarkable happened. Chinese immigrants mostly Cantonese speakers poured into the area. Chinatown couldn’t contain them. They spilled over into Two Bridges enriching the neighborhood’s already diverse population. Vietnamese and Burmese Chinese also found a home here.
But the story doesn’t end there. By the 1980s a new group of immigrants began arriving from Fuzhou a city in Fujian Province China. These Fuzhouese became the largest population group in Two Bridges. They established their own Little Fuzhou along East Broadway creating a distinct cultural enclave within the neighborhood. These immigrants often spoke Mandarin along with their Fuzhou dialect.
Today Two Bridges is a remarkable blend of old and new. The historic tenement buildings stand alongside modern high-rises. Affordable housing developments coexist with market-rate condos. The neighborhood’s rich ethnic history remains visible in its residents. You can still find significant populations of Cantonese Jewish and Puerto Rican residents many of whom reside in housing developments.
Gentrification though is a modern challenge. Rising property values and rents are threatening to displace long-time residents and businesses. The rapid influx of wealthy white professionals is changing the landscape of this area. The Fuzhou-speaking enclave for instance is sadly declining in size.
Despite these challenges Two Bridges retains its vibrant spirit. Its history resonates in its streets. The spirit of its diverse communities continues to thrive. In 2024 the area even made headlines. In a single precinct Donald Trump won. This was the only precinct Trump carried in Manhattan out of all his presidential runs.
