A spine of a gigantic prehistoric dragon. That’s what Bukit Tabur East looks like from afar. This isn’t just any hill. Bukit Tabur East is part of a remarkable quartz ridge the longest exposed quartz formation in the world. It stretches for sixteen kilometers a white veil shielding Kuala Lumpur’s northern edge. Many mistake it for limestone hills. But from the top you see the truth a narrow ridge of exposed quartz. Steep drops fall on either side. The surrounding soil has worn away over time leaving this incredible structure.
Bukit Tabur East isn’t for the faint of heart. The ascent is steep. You’ll need upper body strength. You’ll use rocks roots and ropes for leverage. But the views are breathtaking. The Kuala Lumpur skyline stretches on one side. The Klang Gates reservoir sits on the other. You’ll climb at least four distinct peaks. The highest reaches 355 meters.
One particularly challenging section involves a steep 50-meter rock wall. Fixed ropes are there to help but test them first. Sufficient rock and root toeholds exist if you prefer a rope-free ascent.
From the highest peak you can see Bukit Tabur West and beyond. You’ll even catch glimpses of other hikers. To the east the daunting Bukit Tabur Extreme beckons a distant peak requiring a different approach. But Bukit Tabur East itself ends with a sheer 50-meter drop. Beyond that lies Tabur Far East inaccessible from your vantage point.
The descent offers a choice. Retrace your steps or take a jungle path. This path leads through steep sandy or muddy slopes a challenge on a wet day. It leads you to a T-junction near a village house. From there it’s a stroll back to Taman Melawati.
Bukit Tabur East is less crowded than its western counterpart. But even so it can get busy on the rock climbing stretches. Go early avoid crowds be patient around the rocky areas. Most of all be careful. A serious drop awaits just inches behind you. Bring a hat. The ridge top offers little tree cover. Bukit Tabur East an unforgettable experience but one that demands respect and caution.
