The soaring spire of Saint Anthony-Saint Alphonsus pierces the Brooklyn sky. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and a touch of architectural brilliance.

This magnificent church wasn’t always as grand as it is today. Founded in 1856 as Saint Anthony of Padua it began humbly. Parishioners initially attended Mass in a simple wooden structure on India Street. It wasn’t until 1874 that Patrick C Keeley designed the current Gothic Revival masterpiece. Red brick and white limestone trim create a striking visual contrast. The 240-foot spire dominates the Greenpoint skyline.

The story of Saint Anthony-Saint Alphonsus isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about community. In 1975 Saint Alphonsus Church merged with Saint Anthony’s. The name change marked a union of two devoted congregations. This merger speaks volumes about the enduring spirit of Greenpoint.

The church boasts a rich musical history. Several organs have graced the building over the years. The current instrument is a Midmer-Losh a testament to craftsmanship and musical heritage. Interestingly an earlier organ by Reuben Midmer & Sons was nicknamed the “Columbus Organ” commemorating its installation in 1892. This grand organ featured over 3300 pipes a truly impressive spectacle.

Even the bells have a story. Three 8000-pound Westminster bells fell silent in 2011. Their silence reflects the ongoing challenge of maintaining historical structures. The cost of repair or digital replacement highlights the delicate balance between preservation and financial realities.

Saint Anthony-Saint Alphonsus stands as a symbol of faith resilience and community. More than a place of worship it’s a vibrant hub in the heart of Greenpoint. Its history echoes through the red brick walls its spire points toward the future its bells may be silent but their story continues to resonate. The church endures a beacon of hope in the ever-changing landscape of New York City.
