Sixteen dragons guard this whimsical house. Welcome to the Drachenhaus in Potsdam. This enchanting building nestled on the Klausberg hill isn’t just a pretty face. It’s a piece of Potsdam’s history a testament to Frederick the Great’s love for all things Chinoiserie.

Built between 1770 and 1772 the Drachenhaus is a true example of Chinoiserie architecture. King Frederick the Great commissioned Carl von Gontard to create this pagoda-like structure. It was designed to mimic the style of Chinese pagodas. The influence of Sir William Chambers’ designs is undeniable. Frederick was inspired by Chambers’ publications showcasing Chinese architecture.

Initially intended as a residence for the vineyard’s vintner the Drachenhaus remained unoccupied. The vintner never actually moved in. To prevent its deterioration the building underwent renovations in 1787. It has since served various purposes including housing the overseer of the nearby Belvedere. Since 1934 it has operated as a restaurant. You can enjoy a meal here today surrounded by history.

The Drachenhaus is an octagonal structure with four floors. The ground floor contains a hallway two rooms and a kitchen. The upper floors were initially left open and unused. The sixteen gilded dragons perched atop the concave roofs are its most striking feature. These dragons weren’t always there though. The original dragons crafted by Nathanael Eppen and Gerhard Buschmann were replaced with replicas during a 1904 restoration.

Over the years the Drachenhaus has seen additions. An extra room a laundry and three stables were added to accommodate its inhabitants. Today it still stands as a reminder of Frederick’s fascination with Eastern styles. A fascinating blend of history architecture and gastronomy the Drachenhaus deserves its place as a significant landmark in Potsdam. Enjoy your visit to this captivating building.
