Did you know that Xiqiao Mountain is more than just a scenic spot? Xiqiao Mountain stands as one of Guangdong’s four famous mountains. It is also known as the “Beacon of Pearl River Civilization.”
Let’s delve into the captivating story of Xiqiao Mountain. Its name comes from the simple act of collecting firewood. Legend says that people called Luofu Mountain in the east Dongqiao. They then named the mountain in the west Xiqiao. So Xiqiao Mountain got its name.
In 1960, archaeologist Jia Lanpo made a significant discovery here. He found prehistoric human activity sites. These sites contained microliths and double-shouldered stone tools. Experts confirmed that Xiqiao Mountain was South China’s largest stone tool manufacturing site. This was from the prehistoric period. The Xiqiao Mountain culture helped the Pearl River Civilization. This is why it’s called the “Beacon of Pearl River Civilization.”
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Xiqiao Mountain became a key tea producer. It supplied Guangzhou with its famous Kuding tea. Kuding tea is a kind of bitter-tasting Chinese tea. Baiyun tea was also produced here. Baiyun tea is a kind of Chinese green tea. At the mountain’s foot, a long tea trade street thrived. This street became a hub for tea sales. Because of this, Xiqiao Mountain is also known as the “Tea Mountain.” Even now, the mountain has seven ancient villages. These villages show distinct Lingnan characteristics.
Today, the dormant volcanic crater has become two clear lakes. These lakes sit among 72 lush peaks. Throughout the year, peach blossoms bloom. Tea flowers, osmanthus flowers, and azaleas add fragrance.
But there is even more to discover. There is also the impressive 61.9-meter-high Buddha statue. You can also find Tianhu Lake, temples, pavilions, and waterfalls.
So, Xiqiao Mountain offers a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It is a place where ancient echoes meet fragrant blooms. A place where every stone tells a story of civilization.
