Carved into the cliff face, the Thousand Buddha Cliff carvings whisper stories of centuries past. Here at Thousand Buddha Cliff, also known as Qianfo Cliff, time seems to slow. The Jialing River flows below, reflecting the weathered faces of countless Buddhas. The sheer scale of Thousand Buddha Cliff is breathtaking. It stretches over 200 meters long and reaches 45 meters high. The carvings ascend in layers, a testament to centuries of devotion. Imagine the artisans, meticulously chipping away at the stone. They began their work as early as the Northern Wei Dynasty, adding layer upon layer over 1500 years. Originally, over 17,000 statues adorned these cliffs. Sadly, in 1935, progress took a toll. The construction of the Sichuan-Shaanxi Road resulted in the destruction of more than half the statues. Today, over 7,000 statues and 400 shrines and grottoes remain. These remnants stand as a powerful reminder of the site’s rich history and enduring spirit. At the heart of Thousand Buddha Cliff lies Dayun Cave. It houses 234 statues, including 148 depictions of the Lotus Avalokitesvara. Look closely at the standing statue of Maitreya Buddha, some believe it represents Empress Wu Zetian. Legend connects this statue to a fascinating historical event. In 690 AD, when Wu Zetian ascended the throne, monks composed the “Dayun Scripture.” This scripture proclaimed Wu Zetian as the Maitreya Buddha. Pleased, she ordered the construction of Dayun Temple to house the scripture. It’s said the Dayun Cave and the Maitreya Buddha statue here at Thousand Buddha Cliff honor this very event. Notice the placement of the statues within the cave. They subtly reflect the designers’ ingenuity. While tradition dictates “male left, female right,” these statues are positioned “female left, male right.” A closer examination of the shrines reveals a similar reversal. The male shrines are placed higher than the female shrines. This intentional deviation offers a glimpse into the complex social and political dynamics of the time. Today, a passageway with stairs allows visitors to explore these remarkable carvings. As you ascend, consider the countless pilgrims and artisans who have graced these very steps. Their devotion, artistry, and stories are etched into these very stones.
