Picture the Ludwigschacht a relic of Freiberg’s rich mining past. This wasn’t just any mine shaft. It was the heart of the Ludwiger Revier a vital part of the Himmelfahrt Fundgrube’s central mining district.
The Ludwigschacht’s story begins not in the 18th century but much later in 1853. That’s when the painstaking process of sinking this new shaft commenced. It was a deep dive into the earth a monumental task requiring immense effort and ingenuity. By 1874 after years of relentless work the Ludwigschacht reached an impressive depth of 269 meters. That’s from the level of the Ludwigstolln reaching the 7th Gezeugstrecke. This immense undertaking wasn’t driven by simple greed. It was a response to the ever-growing need to exploit the resources deeper in the central mining district.
What makes the Ludwigschacht truly unique is its reliance on water power. It wasn’t just about extracting ore. The Ludwigschacht also needed to manage vast quantities of water. To achieve this a remarkable 516-lachter long channel was built from the Davider Wäsche. This channel cleverly used gravity. The water flowed down to the Ludwigschacht’s water wheels located 44 Ellen below the surface. These cleverly engineered water wheels powered remarkable machinery. This machinery included a system of pumps and hoists. These were vital for extracting ore and managing the mine’s water table.
By 1858 a sophisticated hoisting system was in place. It was designed with a double hoist system. An 18 and a half Ellen high water wheel powered this system. This wheel was linked to the hoisting mechanism via two cast iron crosses. Initially five 12-inch suction pumps were attached to the hoisting mechanism. The entire operation was an impressive feat of engineering. All this was powered by the steady flow of water from the ingeniously crafted channel.
But the Ludwigschacht wasn’t content with simply managing water. From 1863 onward a water-powered whim was added. This whim further enhanced the mine’s capacity for hoisting ore. A separate wheelhouse and rope cage room were constructed. This meticulous attention to detail was characteristic of the Ludwigschacht’s ambitious design. The rope cage itself was entirely made of cast iron. This innovative water-powered whim was a marvel of its time a testament to the ingenuity of the engineers who designed it.
To house the new whim a substantial engine house was built in 1863. This structure measured an impressive 27 and a half Ellen long 22 Ellen deep and 24 and a half Ellen high. Built using timber framing and brick infill it stood as a lasting symbol of the Ludwigschacht’s importance. The rope pulley system with its safety catches was situated directly under the tar-paper roof.
By 1874 the Ludwigschacht’s sinking had reached its zenith. The 7th Gezeugstrecke had been achieved. By 1879 a pressure pump with a 26 cm piston diameter was installed. This pump assisted in the mine’s ever-present struggle against water. The rising main extended up to the 5th Gezeugstrecke a distance of over 73 meters. The hoisting system was upgraded creating a means for miners to travel the 269 meters between the surface and the deepest parts of the mine.
The Ludwigschacht continued operation until 1907 with a final closure in 1916. The shaft was sealed with a 75 cm thick brick vault reinforced by a 0.5 m thick concrete layer. The remaining shaft was filled with waste rock and debris. All that remains of this remarkable piece of mining history is a substantial overgrown spoil heap and partially exposed remnants of the water wheel. A testament to human endeavour and the relentless pursuit of mineral wealth.
