This Seilscheibe Wismut was once part of the Schacht 388 winding tower. Schacht 388 was located at the Wismut site in Königstein. It is a relic from the former winding tower. It served a vital function. It helped extract resources from deep within the earth.
In 2018, the Wismut GmbH officially gifted the Seilscheibe Wismut to the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Dr. Stefan Mann, Wismut GmbH’s Managing Director, presented it to Professor Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht. Professor Barbknecht was the university’s Rector.
The Seilscheibe Wismut underwent restoration. The Institut für Aufbereitungsmaschinen played a key role. It was carefully restored at the institute’s technical center. Now, the Seilscheibe Wismut stands proudly at the corner of Leipziger Straße and Lampadiusstraße. It is located to the left of the Erich-Rammler-Building.

Other speakers included Günther Knerr. He represented CASAR Drahtseilwerk Saar GmbH. Dr. Christoph Müller spoke for TU Chemnitz. Michael Kronschnabl represented ELASKON Sachsen GmbH & Co.KG.
The Wismut company played a crucial role in uranium mining in East Germany. It operated during the Cold War. Between 1947 and 1990, it produced 230,400 tonnes of uranium. This made East Germany the fourth-largest producer globally. The USSR controlled Wismut. In 1991, after German reunification, Wismut became Wismut GmbH. The Federal Republic of Germany owns it.
Today, Wismut GmbH focuses on restoring former mining sites. It addresses environmental cleanup. The company’s head office is located in Chemnitz-Siegmar.
