Built in 1902 the Grant-Humphreys Mansion stands proudly. It’s a testament to Denver’s rich history. This Neoclassical beauty was commissioned by James Benton Grant. He was Colorado’s third governor. The mansion reflects his success in the ore smelting industry. His wife Mary was a prominent figure in Denver society. She helped found a home for needy children.

After Governor Grant’s death in 1911 his widow lived there for six years. She then sold it in 1917 to Albert E Humphreys. Humphreys was known as “The Wildcatter Deluxe”. He made a fortune in oil. His philanthropic activities were well-known. He and his wife Alice raised their sons Ira and Albert Jr in the mansion.

Ira Humphreys was a mechanical genius. He invented the Humphreys Spiral Concentrator. This device revolutionized mineral separation in mining. Both Ira and Albert Jr were aviation pioneers. They opened Denver’s first commercial airport. In 1969 both were inducted into the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame.

The Colorado Historical Society acquired the mansion in 1976. It was a bequest from Ira Humphreys. The mansion’s original damask wall coverings were sadly removed due to disrepair. Today the Grant-Humphreys Mansion continues to host events. It’s a popular venue for weddings and receptions. It stands as a reminder of Denver’s elegant past and the remarkable families who called it home. The mansion’s legacy lives on. Its story is one of wealth innovation and a touch of mystery surrounding Albert E Humphreys’s death.
