Stand here among the majestic grey gums. See the spotted gums and iron barks. This rocky outcrop provides incredible views. You can look over the England Creek valley. You can also view the Great Dividing Range.

Keep an eye out for major skinks. They forage in the rocky crevasses. Maybe you will spot the silhouette of a grey goshawk. It flies high overhead. At dusk, blossom bats emerge. They stretch their leathery wings. They prepare to fly across the fading sunset.

From this boardwalk at Westridge Outlook, you’ll see remnants. They are from a timber-getting wagon. Bullock teams once hauled it down the steep gullies. Locals once called this outcrop Fang Rock. This was because of the many death adders. They took shelter in the rocky terrain.

To get here from Brisbane, take Mount Nebo Road. This is tourist route number 8. Drive to Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre. Then continue north-west along Mount Nebo Road. Drive 27km to the Westridge Outlook turn-off. This is 6km north of Mount Nebo township. Alternatively, drive 18km from Samford. Go via Mount Glorious and Mount Nebo roads. From the turn-off, drive into Westridge Outlook car park. The boardwalk and lookout are accessible from here.

The forests around Westridge Outlook tell a story of change. Long ago, timber cutters harvested these forests. They used axes and cross-cut saws. The fallen trees were loaded onto wooden carts. Then a team of oxen pulled them to the nearest sawmill. Thankfully, this deforestation stopped. Today, its remains are protected. It is now a reserve for public enjoyment.

As you walk along the boardwalk at Westridge Outlook, admire the mixed forest. See the grey gums and tall tallowwoods. The boardwalk expands into a large viewing area. This exposes an open outlook. The rims of distant mountain ranges frame the horizon. They are shrouded in a blue haze. Lake Wivenhoe is visible from here. It is Brisbane’s main dam and water catchment area. The upper reaches of the Brisbane River snake through the landscape. The D’Aguilar State Forest spreads its abundant natural beauty beneath us.
