Imagine stepping back eight hundred years. Hōsen-in temple’s story began as a humble priest’s quarters. It was linked to the nearby Shōrin-in temple. This temple was famed for its shōmyō, a type of Buddhist chanting.

Today Hōsen-in is more than just a footnote in history. It is a tranquil escape. It showcases stunning gardens and unique architecture.

As you enter Hōsen-in your eyes are drawn upward. A meticulously shaped pine tree mimics Mount Ōmi-Fuji. It is an iconic image. This sets the tone for what awaits.

One of Hōsen-in’s most striking features lies above. Look up at the ceiling in one of the halls. The ceiling is made from the floorboards of Fushimi Castle. A bloody ritual suicide occurred there. Torii Mototada and his soldiers committed suicide rather than surrender. This act bought time for Tokugawa Ieyasu. The blood-stained floorboards were then re-purposed as the ceiling in temples like Hōsen-in. This served as a memorial to the fallen warriors.

Another captivating element is the suikinkutsu. This feature highlights Ōhara’s focus on music and sound. Find the veranda’s corner. There are two bamboo poles sticking out of the floor. Put your ear to one of the poles. You will hear melodic chimes. The sound comes from water dripping onto pebbles in a jar below. It is a clever and calming effect.

Don’t miss the Goyo no Matsu. This pine tree is said to be 700 years old. Over centuries it has been pruned. It now perfectly resembles Mount Ōmi-Fuji. The lower branches are supported by beams. It creates a living frame for the gardens.

South of the Goyo no Matsu is the Hōraku-en Garden. Descend into this garden via large stones. Notice the carefully raked gravel patterns. A pillar of sand and a swirl of rock slabs surround mossy stones. Camellias add splashes of color.

Hōsen-in’s architecture largely dates back to the Muromachi Period. Reconstructions occurred during the Edo Period. This blend of styles adds another layer to its charm.

Before leaving indulge in a moment of serenity. Visitors are offered green tea and a sweet. Take a seat. Savor the garden views as you sip your tea. Let the tranquility wash over you. Hōsen-in is a place to de-stress. It is a place to connect with history and beauty. It is a place that offers a unique sensory experience.
