Ever ridden Berlin’s iconic S-Bahn? Right here before us stands the Berliner S-Bahn-Museum a testament to its fascinating history.

This isn’t just any museum. It’s a journey through time. A journey that began in 1996 in Potsdam. The museum’s humble beginnings featured exhibits primarily from the 1980s. That’s when the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe took over S-Bahn operations on West Berlin lines from the Reichsbahn. Imagine the careful preservation of these artifacts. A second wave of exhibits arrived in the 1990s. These came from signal boxes stations and lines that had been closed or updated. Members of the IGEB Berlin passenger association rescued these pieces from being scrapped. They’re true heroes of transportation history.

The museum initially occupied a 500-square-meter space in an S-Bahn substation at Griebnitzsee station. This building a design by Richard Brademann dated back to 1927/28. The museum was a hit. Hundreds attended the opening days. The volunteer-run museum thrived despite lacking financial support from the government.

Growth however presented challenges. The museum outgrew its space. Accessibility was an issue. In 2016 the museum closed its doors. A new home in Berlin was urgently needed. The hunt was on. Plans for a location on Frankfurter Allee fell through. Eventually a space was secured. This was in a former fast-food restaurant in the Lichtenberg train station. This location provided 450 square meters of space for a modern exhibit a mix of information and emotion using modern media.

The move however was not easy. Delays occurred. A partial reopening happened in August 2022. Many exhibits were temporarily displayed at Gesundbrunnen station. Millions of euros in funding were needed for renovation and the final move was delayed further by the pandemic.

As of January 2024 a temporary solution opened in Berlin Ostbahnhof. This pop-up museum features a selection of the collection. The final destination remains the Lichtenberg station. The ultimate goal is a grand reopening in 2027. This long-awaited return promises a fascinating look at Berlin’s S-Bahn its technological innovation and its role as a political symbol. From signal boxes to ticket printers from vintage posters to the uniforms of the staff this museum tells a captivating story. A story worth experiencing.
