“Need a cure for your ills?” This might have been the cry of the faithful approaching Koya-ji, now known as Koya-ji Temple. We are standing before a temple with a fascinating history. This is Koya-ji.

Koya-ji Temple’s story starts unexpectedly with tragedy and kindness. It begins in 1871. At that time, the abolition of the feudal domain system caused upheaval. Lord Mōri Takachika of Chōshū lost his domain. He gave his Edo residence to Kongōbuji Temple on Mount Kōya.

Kongōbuji Temple quickly built a temple on the site. It enshrined a statue of Kōbō Daishi, a revered Buddhist monk. This marked the start of Koya-ji Temple.

As more people visited the temple in Osaka, it grew in popularity. In 1880, the Kōyasan Junbetsukaku Honzan Mitsuun-in Temple moved here. It brought with it more buildings and expanded the temple grounds. This also led to renaming the temple to Koya-ji.

From then on, the people of Osaka affectionately called it “Lord Kōbō of Chōshū.” The first head priest was the chief priest of Kongōbuji Temple. He was named Gakukai Mōdaishi.

When you climb the stairs to the main hall, you will see fierce Niō guardian statues guarding the temple. An image of Binzuru Sonja sits to the left of the Niō statue.

Inside Koya-ji Temple, you will find Fudō Myōō. You also find Ksitigarbha. Ksitigarbha is known for saving all living things.

Originally founded around 1191, Koya-ji Temple carries almost 800 years of history. Koya-ji stands as a serene landmark. It has been watching the neighborhood morph into what it is today.

Every month on the 21st, Koya-ji Temple holds a special service. This is the Saitō Goma fire ritual. In March and September, they also hold Buddhist memorial services. These are important events for the community.

Today, Koya-ji is easily accessible. It is near the Yotsubashi Line’s Hommachi Station. This temple offers a peaceful escape in the middle of the city.

As we leave Koya-ji Temple, remember its origins. It started as a place of refuge. Now, it is a testament to faith and community in Osaka.
