Is it possible for a building to embody two cultures? St George’s Anglican Church stands before us as a testament to this very idea. Known also as Iglesia Anglicana-Episcopaliana de San Jorge or simply Capilla Británica this church is more than just a place of worship. It is a bridge between England and Spain.
St George’s Anglican Church history began in 1864. Reverend William Campbell, chaplain to the British Embassy, held services in a small room. Later, the British and Foreign Bible Society provided larger premises. In 1900, the coach house of the old British Embassy transformed into a church.
But the present St George’s Anglican Church started in 1923. Funds came from Mr Edgar Allen’s bequest and the English-speaking community. The architect, Teodoro de Anasagasti, designed it. He combined Spanish Romanesque and Mudéjar styles with Anglican forms. St George’s Anglican Church was consecrated in March 1925.
Look at its architecture. The church sits in a rectangular space. A small garden separates it from the street. Anasagasti blended Spanish and Anglican elements. Notice the porch and the chancel. Consider the dossal behind the altar of St George’s Anglican Church.
The church has a single nave. It runs parallel to the north-south direction. There’s a transept and a polygonal chancel. The altar is elevated. To the left, you see a sacristy. Beside it, a Mudéjar-style tower rises.
Let your eyes be drawn to the stained-glass windows of St George’s Anglican Church. In the chancel, Saint George, England’s patron saint shines. Saint James the Great, Spain’s patron, is also depicted. Saint John, Saint Peter and Saint Paul are there too. The nave features Saint David of Wales. Also, Saint Andrew of Scotland, Saint Patrick of Ireland, and Saint Francis of Assisi. The north choir displays Saint Cecilia and Saint Anthony Abbot. Finally, the porch shows the Nativity of Christ.
Since its consecration, St George’s Anglican Church has grown. It is now an international community. About 26 nationalities form its congregation. This church is a welcoming place. It embraces people from all over the world.
