Peeking out from behind the houses, Schloss Freudenstein dominates the skyline. This four-winged castle in Freiberg’s heart has witnessed centuries of Saxon history. Today, we explore its walls that hold more than meets the eye.

Schloss Freudenstein’s story began long ago. Margrave Otto the Rich ordered a castle built around 1175/80. It protected the town and its valuable silver mines. This original structure predates the Freudenstein we see today. It stood as a guardian, watching over Freiberg’s fortunes.

Fast forward to the 16th century. The castle we see now took shape. But its name “Freudenstein” wasn’t official until 1525. Duke Henry the Pious resided here. His sons, Moritz and Augustus, were born within these walls. They later became Electors of Saxony.

Master builder Hans Irmisch began a significant project in 1566. Under Rochus zu Lynar’s guidance, Freudenstein transformed into a Renaissance masterpiece. Construction finished in 1577. The castle became a key part of Freiberg’s defenses during the Thirty Years’ War. It sometimes served as a military base.

The Seven Years’ War left its mark. In 1762, the castle’s interior was wrecked. The military treasury took over in 1784 leading to another major conversion. The Renaissance windows were replaced with smaller ones for an armoury. Inside, simple armoury floors were installed.

From 1800, part of Freudenstein became a miners’ granary. During Napoleon’s occupation in 1813, it served as a hospital for 1,500 wounded soldiers. The town of Freiberg gained ownership in 1957. It remained a granary until 1979.

In 1973, a youth club opened in the basement. A heritage organization then used the castle from 1980 to 1990. They rebuilt the facade of the Neues Haus in the Renaissance style. In 2004, the castle returned to the town of Freiberg’s ownership.

Between 2005 and 2008, a Europe-wide competition led to another transformation. Architects AFF Berlin/Chemnitz gutted the Church Wing. This created space for the mining archives. The “terra mineralia” exhibition found its home in the Long House.

Today, Schloss Freudenstein is home to world-renowned collections. “Terra mineralia” showcases the world’s greatest mineral exhibition. The Bergarchiv is a unique center for mining history. The castle’s courtyard hosts various events. From June to September, “Freiberger Sommernächte” fills the space with concerts and more. In winter, a skating rink invites everyone to enjoy ice-skating.

The castle also features a unique “house-in-house” solution. This separate building within the Church Wing provides the archives with necessary climate control and security. The former kitchen now serves as a treasure chamber for terra mineralia. The courtyard features stone crystals and a modeled mine tunnel made of concrete and glass. For those seeking romance, the Rose Room in the round tower offers a wedding venue.

Schloss Freudenstein was a key part of the “Freiberg 2010” project. This project included renovation, restoration, and various initiatives for the community. Mayor Bernd-Erwin Schramm described it as “a castle steeped in history which is all set for the future”. It combines tradition and modernity. As you leave, remember Freudenstein’s journey. From a defensive castle to a granary, hospital, and now a cultural center. It stands as a testament to Freiberg’s rich past and bright future.
