Erfurt-Weimar Airport has a rich history. The foundation was laid in 1935. It began as a new air base built by the Luftwaffe. This was west of Erfurt near Bindersleben. In 1945, the Red Army took over the air base. They stationed MiG-15 fighter planes here in the 1950s.
Around 1957, the airfield was handed over to East German authorities. They extended it. A 2000-meter-long concrete runway was built. The East German Lufthansa used the airfield. Later, Interflug used it for domestic flights. These flights were discontinued in 1980. There were also connections to socialist countries. Budapest in Hungary was one of those destinations. Erfurt was also a base for Interflug’s agricultural aviation.
After German reunification, Erfurt Airport expanded further. The runway was extended to 2600 meters. In 2011, the airport’s name changed. It became Erfurt-Weimar Airport. The addition of Weimar aimed to better market the area. This was due to Weimar’s historical importance.
Despite being a state capital with a central location, the airport has no domestic flights. A route to Munich Airport ceased in March 2012. Erfurt became a major railway hub by 2017. The Munich-Berlin high-speed line met the Frankfurt-Dresden line in Erfurt. This made domestic flights less necessary. After Germania’s shutdown in 2019, the airport lost many routes.
The airport features one passenger and one business terminal. The passenger terminal has two aircraft parking positions. It has four boarding gates on two levels. The upper levels have jet bridges. Getting to Erfurt-Weimar Airport is easy. You can reach it via the A71 motorway. Take the Erfurt-Bindersleben exit. Erfurt Tram line No. 4 stops in front of the airport. The tram connects the airport to Erfurt’s main train station. The ride takes about 20 minutes.
