Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a zoo in San Diego? That’s what Dr. Harry M. Wegeforth thought. This thought sparked the creation of the San Diego Zoo.

Welcome to the San Diego Zoo. It is more than just a place to see animals. It is a center for conservation and a landmark in San Diego.

In 1915, the Panama-California Exposition left behind a small collection of animals. Dr. Wegeforth saw an opportunity. He envisioned a zoo that would be different. This zoo would recreate natural habitats.

The Zoological Society of San Diego was founded in 1916. Dr. Wegeforth’s dream began to take shape. But it wasn’t easy. The public was skeptical. Some called it “Wegeforth’s Folly”.

The city eventually granted land in Balboa Park in 1921. The zoo began to acquire more animals. A fence was financed by Ellen Browning Scripps. In 1923, the zoo started charging admission.

The San Diego Zoo became a pioneer. It built cageless exhibits. The first lion area without enclosing wires opened in 1922. This innovative approach set the zoo apart.

Belle Benchley became the zoo director in 1925. She was the only female zoo director in the world for many years.

Today, the San Diego Zoo houses over 12,000 animals. These animals represent more than 680 species and subspecies. It is the most visited zoo in the United States. People from all over the world consider it one of the best.

The San Diego Zoo is a private nonprofit conservation organization. It also operates the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

The zoo’s exhibits are designed around specific habitats. You can see an African rain forest with gorillas or the Arctic taiga with polar bears. The Owens Aviary and the Scripps Aviary are among the largest free-flight aviaries.

The San Diego Zoo is also a botanical garden. It has more than 700,000 exotic plants. These plants provide food for the animals.

The zoo has played a crucial role in conservation. The Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species was founded in 1975. It is now the Institute for Conservation Research.

The San Diego Zoo has had its share of escapees. Ken Allen, a Bornean orangutan, was famous for his escapes. He was known as “the hairy Houdini”. In 1940, a Malayan Tapir named “Terrible Trudy” escaped several times.

One notable event involved a koala named Mundu. In 2014, Mundu escaped to a neighboring tree. Zookeepers lured him back after the park closed. In 2023, Adira, a red panda, escaped for six hours.

The San Diego Zoo has achieved many awards. These awards recognize its exhibits and conservation efforts. In 1961, it received an award for the first koala birth in the Western Hemisphere. It also received awards for Galapagos tortoise hatching and Gila monster hatching.

The San Diego Zoo is more than just a zoo. It’s a place of wonder and learning. It’s a testament to the power of a single idea. It started with a lion’s roar and a doctor’s dream. Now, it is a world-renowned institution.
