From its humble beginnings on the banks of Buffalo Bayou in 1841 Houston’s First Baptist Church has witnessed incredible change. Sixteen men and women founded this church. They established it just five years after Texas gained independence from Mexico. This was a time of significant upheaval and uncertainty.
The church faced many challenges. Wars ravaged the land. Yellow fever epidemics swept through the city. Financial difficulties threatened its existence. Even the devastating 1900 Galveston hurricane destroyed one of its early buildings. Yet through it all Houston’s First Baptist Church persevered.
Its impact extended far beyond its walls. Church leaders played a crucial role in establishing the Star of Hope Mission. They also founded a clinic that evolved into the renowned Memorial Hermann Healthcare System. The church’s Sunday school classes became the seeds for other churches. These include the Chinese Baptist Church and the Woodhaven Baptist Deaf Church. These were remarkable achievements demonstrating the church’s dedication to community service.
In 1977 under the leadership of Dr John Bisagno the church experienced a period of phenomenal growth. This expansion led to a relocation from its downtown location to a larger facility near the Katy Freeway and West 610 Loop. This growth demonstrated the enduring appeal of the church’s message.
Pastor Gregg Matte took the helm in 2004. Before his role at First Baptist he founded Breakaway Ministries. This is the nation’s largest on-campus college Bible study. He also authored several books and received awards for his contributions. His leadership further solidified the church’s position in the community.
Houston’s First Baptist Church continued to adapt and grow. It opened a downtown campus. It also established a campus in Cypress to serve the burgeoning northwest Houston area. This shows an ongoing commitment to reaching new communities. Today Houston’s First Baptist Church continues its mission. It serves the community with its expansive programs and ministries. These include a fitness center a counseling center and First Baptist Academy. The church’s Faith Center sponsors numerous initiatives. These are a food pantry a clothes closet ESL classes and after-school programs. This shows the enduring legacy of a church that began on the muddy banks of Buffalo Bayou and continues to thrive in a constantly evolving Houston. The church’s story is one of resilience faith and remarkable impact on the city’s landscape.
