“Did Tchaikovsky ever imagine his ‘Nutcracker’ overture echoing through these very halls?” We stand before Lenfilm, a cinematic institution steeped in history, right here in Saint Petersburg. Lenfilm, a name synonymous with Russian cinema, has witnessed the evolution of film from its silent beginnings to the vibrant productions of today. Its history intertwines with the city’s own dramatic narrative. Originally, this site housed the Aquarium Garden, a place of entertainment owned by merchant Georgy Alexandrov. It was a hub of cultural activity. Composer Peter Tchaikovsky attended a performance of his ‘Nutcracker’ overture here in the Aquarium Theatre, now Lenfilm’s Stage #4. The legendary Feodor Chaliapin graced this stage in the early 20th century. Stars of the Soviet era, like Isaak Dunaevsky and Leonid Utyosov’s jazz band, also filled these spaces with music. In 1918, this artistic haven was nationalized, becoming a cornerstone of the Soviet film industry. Lenfilm, under various names initially, emerged as a powerhouse. It attracted prominent figures like Yevgeni Zamyatin, Grigori Kozintsev, and Sergei Eisenstein. The studio produced numerous films, including classics like “Chapaev” and “Cinderella”. Even during the harrowing Siege of Leningrad, a handful of cinematographers remained, documenting the city’s resilience. Most of Lenfilm, however, was evacuated to Central Asia, merging temporarily with other studios. The studio’s legacy continued to grow. International stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda, and Ava Gardner graced its stages. The Aquarium Theatre, where we imagine Tchaikovsky once sat, became a cinematic stage for films like “The Blue Bird” and “Orlando”. Lenfilm has collaborated with numerous Oscar-winning actors and actresses. By the end of the Soviet era, Lenfilm had produced an impressive 1,500 films, many garnering international acclaim. Today, Lenfilm stands as a testament to the enduring power of storytelling. Its walls echo with the voices and visions of countless artists. The spirit of innovation and creativity continues to thrive within these historic studios.
