Gazing up at Panchamuga Vinayakar Koil, imagine five elephant heads. Each head looks towards a different direction. One head faces upwards. These five heads belong to a single, massive 12-foot statue of Ganapathy. This is no ordinary Ganapathy. This is Sri Panchamuga Heramba Ganapathy. He sits upon a lion, his ten arms holding various symbolic items. A noose, a goad, a rudraksha garland, powder, a battle axe, and a cord are among them. Panchamuga Vinayakar Koil houses this unique deity. He embodies five different Ganapathis: Maha Ganapathy, Siddhi Ganapathy, Vidhya Ganapathy, Shakthi Ganapathy, and Moksha Ganapathy. Each face also represents a powerful god. Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, Goddess Shakthi, and Lord Surya. The elements themselves, earth, fire, water, air, and ether, are believed to flow from him. Within Panchamuga Vinayakar Koil, he oversees the cosmic cycles of creation, preservation, destruction, illusion, and grace. He’s also called Achabhura Ganapathy. His position within the temple is specific. He is placed in the ‘Kanni Moolai,’ between the south and west directions. Surrounding him are Bala Ganapathy and Lakshmi Ganapathy. Look closely at the gopuram above. Notice how it reflects the architectural style of Orissa? A special day at Panchamuga Vinayakar Koil is Sankatahara Chaturthi. Remember the five heads, the ten arms, and the lion. These symbols of Panchamuga Heramba Ganapathy tell a story of immense power and cosmic significance.
