What if I told you that this very Trombly Park is more than just swings and slides? It is a space with a story etched into its very soil. A story of community, dedication, and a touch of historical charm.

Welcome to Trombly Park a place where laughter dances on the breeze. It is a haven where memories are made. This park isn’t just a green space. It is a testament to the spirit of Grosse Pointe Woods.

The story of this park begins with Hattie Chene. She donated this land to the city in the late 1930s. Her provision was simple. It should be used as a park forever. Hattie Chene’s generosity laid the foundation for generations of joy.

Fast forward to more recent times. Chene-Trombly Park needed a little rejuvenation. The existing playscape was renovated. A new accessible tot lot was added. Restrooms and a walking path were created.

The grand opening was quite the event. There was a DJ. The Treat Dreams Dream Machine food truck was present. Kindness Rock Garden rock painting was available. Bubble wands floated through the air. The Woods Public Safety Department brought its ladder truck.

Mayor Arthur Bryant recognized the need for improvements. He noted the original park only had one piece of equipment. It was a large playscape for older children. The park needed something for the little ones.

Now, the tot lot features a special swing set. It is a friendship swing. Two friends can sit facing each other. Or a parent and child can swing together. There is even a merry-go-round accessible to wheelchairs. A sandbox with digging tools lets kids hunt for fossils.

Assistant City Administrator Susan Como proudly declared it incredible. She said the park now has a beautiful tot lot for children with special needs. Nothing like it existed in the area.

The Grosse Pointe Woods Foundation played a key fundraising role. Local families also stepped up to help. Greg DeMars supported the project in honor of his mother Phyllis. Phyllis DeMars was a special education teacher. She dedicated her life to teaching and kids. The park struck Greg as a project she would have loved.

The DeMars and Cracchiolo families raised about $200000. The total project cost exceeded $561000. The city covered the remaining costs.

Mayor Bryant described the park as colorful bright and cheery. The park stands as a testament to community collaboration. It is a place where children of all abilities can play and grow.

So, as you wander through Trombly Park, remember its story. Remember Hattie Chene’s vision. Think of Phyllis DeMars’ dedication to children. Consider the community’s commitment. This park is more than just a place. It is a living story. A story of generosity community and the enduring power of play.
