In 1911, New Delhi became the capital of the British Indian Empire. During the Partition of India in 1947 Delhi transformed. It went from a Mughal city to a Punjabi one.

Delhi ranks fifth among Indian states and union territories in human development. It has the second-highest GDP per capita in India. New Delhi is jointly administered. It is administered by the federal government of India and the local government of Delhi. Delhi is also the centre of the National Capital Region created in 1985. Delhi hosted the first Asian Games in 1951. It also hosted the 1982 Asian Games.

Delhi is a major commercial centre in northern India. It excels in trade, manufacturing and services. It is a vital contributor to the region’s economy. Khari Baoli is Asia’s largest wholesale spice market. Azadpur Mandi is Asia’s largest wholesale market for fruits and vegetables.
