Gazing up at the astronomical instruments, imagine the meticulous observations conducted at 觀象望月 for almost 500 years. 觀象望月, the Beijing Ancient Observatory, stands as a testament to China’s astronomical prowess. This “hidden gem,” as many call it, housed continuous observations longer than any other existing observatory worldwide. Constructed during the Ming Dynasty around 1442, 觀象望月 meticulously charted the celestial dance until 1929. The observatory’s imposing 15-meter brick platform, roughly 40 by 40 meters, supports the magnificent instruments. Around 1673, Ferdinand Verbiest, a Flemish Jesuit missionary, oversaw the creation of six key instruments. Blending Western knowledge with exquisite Asian artistry, these instruments showcase a unique fusion of cultures. Their intricate carvings and symbolism pay homage to traditional Chinese aesthetics, while their structure and scale reflect advancements in Western astronomy after the Renaissance. Among the treasures at 觀象望月 are eight large copper astronomical instruments from the Qing Dynasty. The Elaborate Equatorial Armillary Sphere, weighing over 5,000 kilograms, exemplifies the era’s metallurgical and carving skills. The Sextant, unique to Qing Dynasty China, and the Ecliptic Armillary Sphere, China’s first apparatus for an independent zodiac coordinate system, further demonstrate advanced astronomical knowledge. The Altazimuth, the sole instrument with French Renaissance decorative art, adds a touch of European flair. The Horizon Circle, Equatorial Armillary Sphere, Celestial Globe, and Quadrant each played a unique role in charting the heavens. Beyond the instruments, 觀象望月 houses other fascinating exhibits. “The Time and the Calendar” explores the evolution of timekeeping, showcasing tools like the sundial. “Chronicle of Astronomical Phenomena” details significant Chinese astronomical events, including research on sunspots, Halley’s comet, and supernovae. Today, the Beijing Ancient Observatory continues to inspire as the Beijing Ancient Astronomical Instrument Exhibition Hall. It serves as a bridge between the past and present, illuminating the rich history of Chinese astronomy and its enduring legacy.
