That image guided the design of the Gahoe-dong Catholic Church. Today we explore the Gahoe-dong Catholic Church. This church stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity and cultural harmony.
In 2010, safety concerns prompted a rebuild of the church. The Archdiocese of Seoul launched an architectural design contest. The brief? To reflect the area’s character and its historical significance as a Catholic holy ground. Architect Dae-seung Woo won the contest with his unique vision.
Woo’s design embodies a fusion of modern and traditional elements. It is as if a Western priest and a Korean scholar are friends. The new Gahoe-dong Catholic Church features a hanok. This traditional Korean house complements the chapel’s modern design. The collaboration between the church and the architect resulted in a harmonious space.
To blend with the Bukchon Hanok Village, the architect cleverly designed three underground floors. These accommodate two-thirds of the facilities. He placed the low-rise hanok near the roadside. The chapel and priest’s office are behind the hanok. Courtyards connect the hanok, chapel, and priest’s office. They create a spacious, cozy atmosphere.
The central courtyard welcomes the public. Here, you can admire the refined beauty of traditional architecture. Notice the stylish, minimalistic Western design too. Stairs lead to the chapel through a connecting courtyard. This guides visitors from the secular world into a peaceful space. You can leave your worries behind and appreciate the reverent atmosphere. Don’t miss the rooftop. From there, you can see the beautiful landscape of traditional houses in the village.
Near the Gahoe-dong Catholic Church is the Seokjeong Full Moon Well. It provided drinking water until the early 20th century. It is said that Korea’s first foreign priest, Zhou Wenmo, used this water for baptisms. The Gahoe-dong Catholic Church is a place where tradition and modernity meet.
