Founded as a special needs school, Schule Lokstedter Damm holds more history than meets the eye. The school started as Heilpädagogische Tagesschule Lokstedter Damm in 1963. But its oldest building dates back to 1898.
Let’s step back in time. Eduard Lippert, a Hamburg merchant, built the Säuglingsheim Marienruh here. It was a home for infants. After Lippert’s death in 1925, the building became a state orphanage. From 1935, it served as an external facility for the Carl-Götze-Schule.
Today, Schule Lokstedter Damm has expanded since then. Three extensions were added to accommodate its growing needs. In 2014, the school celebrated its 50th anniversary.
The focus of Schule Lokstedter Damm is on students with intellectual disabilities. The school first expanded in 1965. Further expansions followed in 1980 and 1997. Today, about 95 students attend the school in Groß-Borstel.
The school grounds are quite impressive. Schule Lokstedter Damm consists of four buildings. These house the administration, classrooms, and specialized rooms. The students have access to playgrounds. These spaces are equipped with sandboxes, climbing structures, and slides. It offers opportunities for recreation.
Leading Schule Lokstedter Damm is Mr. Eikermann. He has been the principal since 2000. Though a qualified special needs teacher, he now manages the school.

The school was inaugurated in 1963. The school was once known as Sonderschule Lokstedter Damm. It offered a day school program for students with mental disabilities.
