Listen closely. The Chapelle paroissale des Cornillons whispers a story. It’s a story of faith perseverance and unexpected twists. Right here before you stands a small unassuming chapel. Yet its walls hold a century of worship and change.

The Chapelle paroissale des Cornillons wasn’t always a place of prayer. In 1852 a local man Alphonse Favre established a Protestant school in a humble chalet. Protestantism was not the dominant religion in Pregny. This made the school a beacon for the isolated Protestant families. The school moved several times. Eventually it became a full-fledged chapel.

In 1901 William Barbey commissioned architect Edmond Fatio. The result? This very chapel you see today. Its style is called Heimatstil a popular architectural style in Geneva around the time of the 1896 Swiss National Exhibition. The chapel’s rustic stonework and distinctive roofline perfectly exemplify this style. Notice the charming bell tower. Its bell cast in 1913 still rings manually.

The Chapelle paroissale des Cornillons has always been dedicated to Protestant worship. It’s part of the Paroisse des 5 Communes. However a new chapter began in 2013. The Coptic Orthodox community began holding services here. This marked a significant shift in the chapel’s use. The interior was modified to accommodate their unique religious practices.

The chapel has also played host to unique events. In 1971 Jozsef Molnar gave his first ever concert of alpine horns accompanied by an organist. Imagine that soundscape!

But there’s more. Look carefully. You’ll find a mural inside. It depicts the Last Supper. It was painted in 1945 or 1946 by Thierry Vernet. This beautiful artwork provides a serene focal point within the chapel. The mural adds another layer to the rich history of the Chapelle paroissale des Cornillons.

The Chapelle paroissale des Cornillons is more than just a building. It is a testament to adaptation and the enduring power of faith. It stands as a bridge between generations and traditions. It is a vital part of the community of Pregny-Chambésy and its legacy continues to resonate today.
