Gazing upon Hyndland Parish Church, imagine the bustling city of Glasgow in the late 1800s. The area of Hyndland was transforming into a residential haven. The faithful needed a place to worship. A modest tin church once stood opposite this very spot. But the growing community yearned for a grander space. Now, behold the magnificent result. Hyndland Parish Church, also known as The Kingsborough Sanctuary, stands as a testament to the vision of its founders. This Neo-Gothic masterpiece, designed by the renowned William Leiper, was erected between 1886 and 1887. Its cruciform design boasts a nave, aisles, transepts, and a chancel. The rich red Ballochmyle sandstone glows in the Glasgow sunlight. Step inside and marvel at the timber-vaulted interior roof, supported by columns with intricately carved capitals. The original terrazzo floor still gleams. Original furnishings, including a marble pulpit and communion table, grace the space. The majestic Henry Willis organ, installed in 1887, fills the sanctuary with its rich tones. The church also houses a stunning collection of stained glass. Admire the works of Norman Macdougall, Douglas Strachan, Douglas Hamilton, Gordon Webster, William Wilson, Sax Shaw, Paul Lucky, and Rab MacInnes, spanning over a century of artistic expression. Three additional windows, crafted by Oscar Paterson in 1897, were rescued from the demolished St Bride’s Church in Partick. In 2017, Hyndland Parish Church merged with Broomhill Parish Church. The united congregation now primarily worships at Broomhill. Hyndland Parish Church was renamed The Kingsborough Sanctuary. It continues to serve as a place of worship, but also hosts concerts and events. As you leave Hyndland Parish Church, carry with you the echoes of its rich history and artistic legacy. This architectural gem stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community in the heart of Glasgow.
