Gazing across the Brisbane River, did you ever imagine a suburb named after a poet? Milton, a vibrant mix of industry, offices, and homes, owes its name to John Milton, the English wordsmith. Ambrose Eldridge, a chemist and early settler, christened his farm “Milton Farm” in the late 1840s, a tribute to the poet. This farm became the heart of what we now know as Milton. Milton, a mere 2.9 kilometers west of Brisbane’s CBD, has evolved from farmland to a bustling suburb. It’s a journey reflected in its landmarks, like the heritage-listed Milton House, built around 1853 for Eldridge himself. This house wasn’t just a home; it was the center of Eldridge’s ambitious agricultural experiments. He even won an award for his cotton grown right here in Milton. Later, John Frederick McDougall, a member of Queensland’s first Legislative Council, bought Milton House and expanded it. He added significantly to the size of the home and also acquired substantial pastoral leases in the surrounding area. The streets around Milton House – McDougall, Manning, Walsh, and Crombie – echo the names of its prominent residents. Imagine the echoes of their lives within these walls. The house later served as a women’s college hostel before becoming part of the Kings Row Corporate Park. Today, restored to its 1860s glory, it stands as a testament to Milton’s rich past. From a chemist’s cotton farm to a bustling suburb, Milton’s story is woven into the fabric of Brisbane’s history.
