Approximately 40000 souls rest here at the Jüdischer Friedhof Rat-Beil-Straße. This isn’t just any cemetery. It’s one of the most beautiful in the Rhine-Main area a true treasure trove of history.
Opened in 1828 it served Frankfurt’s Jewish community for almost a century. Before this the community had used a much smaller burial ground near the old Judengasse. Overcrowding made it necessary to find a larger site. The new cemetery was built just outside Frankfurt’s city limits along with the main Christian cemetery.
Imagine the scene in 1828. Families arriving carrying their loved ones. Grief mingling with the hope of a peaceful resting place. This place offered more than just graves. It offered a sense of community and identity.
The Jüdischer Friedhof Rat-Beil-Straße isn’t simply a place of mourning. It’s a living testament to the vibrant Jewish community that thrived in Frankfurt. Magnificent mausoleums stand as silent witnesses. They reflect the wealth and artistry of prominent families. Among the most striking are the Rothschild family tombs. Their elaborate designs tell tales of prosperity and enduring legacy.
But you’ll find more than just opulence here. The graves of Bertha Pappenheim a pioneering feminist and Moritz Daniel Oppenheim a celebrated painter are among those present. Each stone tells a unique story. They collectively build a powerful narrative of creativity perseverance and social change.
Note the classical style entrance. Designed by City Architect Friedrich Rumpf it’s a stunning white portal with Doric columns. The Hebrew inscription above reads “Who walks the straight path shall enter in peace there where they rest on their couches”. Today the entrance is no longer used. A simpler gate a short distance away provides access.
Even after the Jüdischer Friedhof Rat-Beil-Straße closed in 1928 after the last burial on September 18th it remained an important site. It continues to be a place of remembrance and reflection. Occasional burials still occur for family members of those already interred.
