Gazing up at the Manx hills, can you sense the secrets buried within? We stand before the remnants of Dixons Vein Lead Mine, a testament to the island’s rich mining heritage. Dixons Vein Lead Mine, established in 1835, played a vital role in the Foxdale mining story. This mine, nestled high in the hills west of Foxdale, focused on the main lode of the Foxdale shear, a mineral-rich zone stretching across the island. William Jones, in his 1835 report, documented the discovery of the vein that would become Dixons Vein Lead Mine. The early days of Dixons Vein Lead Mine were marked by the familiar foe of Manx miners: water. Work was temporarily halted shortly after its establishment due to flooding. Ingeniously, a day level was driven to intersect the shaft at 20 fathoms to address the water issue. Work resumed, and the main shaft eventually reached a depth of 47 fathoms, at a considerable cost of £2,300. Levels were driven at 17, 32, and 47 fathoms. A second shaft, the East Shaft, was dug 280 yards further east and connected with the day level. Unfortunately, the mine’s productivity faltered, hindering further development. Dixons Vein Lead Mine, despite its challenges, contributed to the overall output of the Foxdale mining district. It stands as a reminder of the ingenuity and perseverance of the Manx miners who toiled within the earth.
