Amidst the serene Hauptfriedhof stands the Kriegerdenkmal 1914-18. It’s a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of the Great War. The Kriegerdenkmal 1914-18 serves as a solemn tribute to the residents of Frankfurt am Main who perished or went missing during World War I. This memorial, crafted from stone, bears a simple yet powerful inscription: “Den gefallenen Helden Ehre und Dank” (“To the fallen heroes, honor and thanks”). It stands as a testament to the sacrifice of those who fought for their country. Another Kriegerdenkmal in Frankfurt, located at the Rohmerplatz, specifically commemorates the 1,200 soldiers from Bockenheim who fell in World War I. This monument, erected in 1925, features a kneeling warrior. This warrior holds his shield, a symbol of both protection and loss. The inscription on the front reads: “In memory of the 1,200 brave Bockenheim heroes who died on the field of honor for the Fatherland, 1914-1918.” The rear inscription states: “Erected by the Kriegerverein Bockenheim on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary. Donated by the grateful inhabitants of Bockenheim.” While the Kriegerdenkmal 1914-18 at Hauptfriedhof encompasses both World Wars, the Rohmerplatz memorial focuses solely on World War I, providing a distinct lens through which to understand the war’s impact on specific communities within Frankfurt. Both memorials offer a space for reflection and remembrance, ensuring that the sacrifices of those lost are never forgotten.
