Founded in 1953 First Progressive Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Its story began with Bishop J M Haywood as pastor. The congregation purchased its current location at 7257-59 South Wabash and 60 East 73rd Street in 1954. This marked a significant step for the growing church.
First Progressive Baptist Church flourished under Bishop Haywood’s leadership. The mortgage was burned in 1967 a remarkable achievement reflecting the congregation’s dedication. Sadly Bishop Haywood passed away in 1970. His legacy however continued to shape the church.
Several pastors followed each contributing to the church’s growth and development. Reverend Bennett Wolfe served from 1973 to 1977. Reverend Fred L Dade served faithfully until 2002. The current pastor Dr Derrius M Colvin Sr has been leading the congregation since 2003.
In 2013 the church made a significant decision. They changed their name from First Progressive Church of Christ to First Progressive Church. This change better reflected their non-denominational identity. First Progressive Baptist Church truly embraces its mission.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges. The church building was closed from March 22 to June 28 2020. Worship services Bible classes and ministry meetings transitioned online. The church reopened its doors on July 5 2020. The annual Thanksgiving food giveaway continued even during the pandemic.
First Progressive Baptist Church’s vision is to be a love-driven congregation. They aim to win lost souls to Christ through worship and community programs. Their mission is to evangelize through community outreach. They also equip believers to mature in their faith. This church is more than just a building. It is a vibrant community of faith hope and love. It serves as a beacon of hope for the Detroit community.
