Some believe it honors Christophe Viau, who owned land nearby on Île Jésus in 1823. Another theory suggests it recognizes Pierre Viau, a farmer in Saint-Vincent-de-Paul. He was part of a group that built two bridges over the Rivière des Prairies in 1847 and 1849. A third possibility points to François Viau, who owned land next to the bridge in 1883. The Pont Viau carries Route 335 and a designated bus lane. This bus lane provides a vital link to Montreal’s public transportation system. Approximately 36,000 vehicles cross the Pont Viau each weekday. This demonstrates its importance to the daily lives of many people. In 2007, a large hole and crack appeared in the bus lane. This caused a temporary closure. However, after a thorough inspection, the bridge was deemed structurally sound and reopened the same day.
